About this book

Die swerfjare van Poppie Nongena | General Fiction

Elsa Joubert

Poppie Nongena grew up with Ouma Hannie in Upington and with her mom in Lambert’s Bay’s township. But when she married the migrant worker Stone Nongena and was forced by the authorities to relocate to the township Nyanga, Poppie’s life changed irrevocably. Shortly thereafter, Poppie’s trouble with the pass law system started. The next ten years, Poppie fought local authorities who wanted to force her and her children to move to the Ciskei, a homeland outside East London. Throughout this hardship, Poppie remained determined to provide her children with a good education and a better future.

This heart-wrenching, but inspiring novel tells the story of a black woman’s struggle against the laws of apartheid. It is still considered as one of the best African novels of the twentieth century.
