Mariël le Roux
WInner of the second prize in the Sanlam-Tafelberg Novel competition.
Carli Botha was almost seven when her Italian-born mother, Bella, died during the birth of her malformed, brainless [anencephalitic] brother. At the childbed Carli overhears Lena, for many years the domestic at the Grootvlei farm house, saying, “It’s a cathead, Master.”
Carli is left behind in the care of her dipsomaniac father, Wilhelm. Dora also helps out in the farm house at times. During the day she comes to Carli’s rescue. A strong woman, the sword dangling over the head of the master of Grootvlei is in her hands. She knows the secrets of the farm back to the days of grandpa Maans, and she would talk, that much Wilhelm Botha knows...
