 This is a narration about the quest of a man for the meaning of his existence. He tells his story in the face of death and as such his quest is elevated, a search for the light. But in the background there are two other voices, of him as a child and as a young policeman.

These two voices continually impinge on his elevated search and in a sense bring it back to earth. This anchors his narration in concrete, banal experience, even undermines it, and so gives concrete shape to a primitive human dilemma, namely being trapped between heaven and hell, between what a human is and what he would like to be.
