Carel van der Merwe

Biographical info

Carel van der Merwe was born in 1963 in Johannesburg, and studied at Stellenbosch University and the University of Cape Town. In 1995 he was co-founder of African Merchant Bank. From 2000 he lived and worked in the UK for six years, and there he completed a master’s degree in creative writing cum laude. His first novel, Nasleep/No Man’s Land, was shortlisted for the Commonwealth Prize and the M-Net Prize (in English) and for the UJ Prize (in Afrikaans.) His novels Geldwolf/Shark were published in 2009, and Skaduwee/Shadow in 2012. Geldwolf was awarded the Eugène Marais Prize. His first non-fiction work, Donker stroom. Eugène Marais en die Anglo-Boereoorlog, was published in 2015. Donker stroom was shortlisted for the UJ Literary Prize, and was awarded the South African Academy for Arts and Sciences Protea Boekhuisprys for the best Afrikaans historical work. Donker stroom was also awarded the kykNET-Rapport Prize for the best Afrikaans non-fiction work, and nominated for the SALA 2016 Creative Non-fiction Award. Carel lives in Stellenbosch with his family.
