Bun Booyens (samesteller-compiler)

Biographical info

Bun Booyens was born in Oudtshoorn on June 12 1959. He matriculated at Paul Roos Gimnasium in Stellenbosch in 1977. He studied journalism at the University of Stellenbosch. He subsequently held the positions of environmental reporter at Die Burger, communications chief of the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF), lecturer at Stellenbosch University’s journalism department and later assistant editor of Die Burger. In 2003 he was appointed editor of the first Afrikaans outdoors magazine Weg and, eventually, editor in chief of Weg, Go, WegSleep, Drive Out and WegRy.

He is currently editor of Die Burger newspaper.

Did you know? 

· Bun was a member of the 1998 SANAE 29 group who spent the winter in Antarctica.
· His father, Prof Bun Booyens, was a well-known cultural historian and the author of a number of books, including a biography of Danie Craven that was published in 1975.
· At the 2006 Pica Awards he received the first Jane Raphaely Prize for Editor of the Year. In the same year he also received the Admag Award as editor of the year.
