Gilbert Gibson was born on a farm near Marquard in the Free State in 1963. He studied medicine at the University of the Free State and is currently practicing as a physician in Bloemfontein. He made his debut in 2001 with twelve poems in Nuwe Stemme 2.
His first volume Boomplaats received the Protea Poetry Prize in 2006 for the best Afrikaans collection of poetry published in the preceding year. Boomplaats was also shortlisted for the Ingrid Jonker Prize. His second volume, Kaplyn, appeared in 2007.
Did you know?
- His first verses were published in Standpunte and Tydskrif vir Letterkunde while he was still at school.
- The title of his volume Boomplaats refers to the Battle of Boomplaats (1848) in which Sir Harry Smith defeated a Boer commando under Andries Pretorius in a campaign to restore British authority in the Free State.
